School...

Well, here I am agian in my second shift in the computer lab. My first shift ended up being not quite as quiet as most people had predicted. A TA for a fourth year RELS course came in and asked me f she could scan fifteen pages from their textbook to send to the students because the new ones had not arrived at the bookstore. I didn't really know how to use the scanner (or what the copyright laws were, for that matter) so I got her to call in one of the techies who are in charge of the lab. He came in and together with another student showed her how to use the scanner and make the scanned pages into a pdf so she could attach and send all the pages as one file. I watched them do one page and then helped her do the other fourteen. After we made it into a pdf, we tried to send it and discovered it was too large a file because all the scanned paged were considered images, not text, so we had to go back and create a two new files half the size so they could be sent in two seperate email. By the time we finished, my shift had been over for half an hour, but my replacement had just arrived so I would have had to stick around anyway.

I had two classes for the first time yesterday. The Physics classroom was very full. There were five people on the waitlist who also came and there weren't enough spaces at the tables for everyone. Prof. Sikkema said he has never had such a popular course. We are changing classrooms for the next class. My other class, Foundations of Education, is still a bit of a mystery as to how that will go. I've heard some people say it's hard and some people say it's a breeze, so I'll see how it goes.

Most of my classes, including physics, have one or more papers which I am not looking forward to, but I'll tackle them whenever they come. Right now I have a lot of reading to do.

I actually got most things I planned to do this weekend done. I didn't tell Klassic Catering I want to take a semester off. A good opportunity never came up so I'll just tell them whenever they call and asked me to work again. I did most of the reading I needed to do and finished it last night. I even got to go swing dancing. The part at the beginning where they teach you is the most fun part. After that you just have to sort of wait for a guy to ask you. I danced with James on Sunday, but the rest was just sitting. I haven't exactly figured out very many moves yet.

People actually ask me questions! I've gotten one on how to print power point slides, how to print on both sides of the page, and how to pay the printing balance. I got one I didn't know how to answer on what to do if you can log into the student portal but you can't log onto a lab computer. It should be the same name and password so I have no idea. I just helped one guy with a similar problem who was given a new password because his old one was not secure, but he couldn't log on to the student portal either. No one has had trouble with the duel-boot system so that seems to be working okay. Everything is quiet now so there isn't much to do.

I start marking homework for Business Calculus on Friday. I pick the work up on Friday and have to have it back in by Wednesday. It is supposed to take me about four hours to mark 5 different problems for 50 students. The answer key has been provided for me so that is a blessing.

Tonight I am tutoring Kate, which is interesting, but it also make fitting my reading in interesting too. The last two times Kate has been reading novels from the Little House one the Prairie series. I am enjoying that because it has been a long time since I read them.

Hey Megan,

Usually it will say in the book how much you are allowed to copy, if at all, but it's something that people do all the time. Whether or not it's legal, I'm not 100% on.

Computer problems are always fun... our printer wouldn't print in my lab on Monday, so I had to e-mail it to myself in order to print. I just had to pick the only one that wouldn't print.

Who's Kate? What are you tutoring her for? It's good that you've got some part-time jobs. But yeah, don't over-extend yourself... if you do find yourself in the same situation as me, don't be afraid to let something go! I did and even though I felt bad at first for letting people down, it's definitely worth it.

Cheers!

Hey Hey Hey!!! It is me. Yes, that me. (I could hear you saying, "Hi Me," in my head) I hope your week is going well. You just called me in the middle of that last sentence :D SO I guess I will see you tonight and find out how your week has been going in person! See you soon!

Kate is one of the Korean children I tutor in ESL. I also tutor her younger brother Ken. We mostly just work through a workbook on grammar, spelling, writing, math, and reading comprehension. They also read out loud to me for the last half hour.
