Wow, what a hectic week. It feels like the work never stops!
I had a presentation on Wednesday on an article I barely understood (which just happened to be written by my prof.). Luckily, I was only presenting to three other people, but I was still pretty nervous. Monday night as I was working on writing what I was going to say, I was almost panicking because I didn't know what to write. I think it ended up okay. I repeated myself a lot during my presentation because I was nervous and afterwards I was as hot and sweaty as after I just finished playing tennis earlier that day.
Tuesday night I stayed up til 2:00am working on the outline and bibliography I had due for my Databases course on Thursday. I had to do it Tuesday night because Wednesday night was Lifeline. Choosing a topic for that paper was a pain because I don't know much about databases. I asked one of my classmates who has worked with databases for ideas and he gave me a really technical, focused one which I couldn't find many articles on. I went and asked my acedemic advisor for help because he is a Math/Computing prof. but he gave me one that was too narrow and I couldn't find articles on that either. Then I asked my dad and he said he didn't know much about databases but he gave me an idea, based on what my academic advisor said, that I ended up using.
It was a relief when Thursday came around and those assignments were handed in. However, in my databases class on Thursday, we were reminded that we need to start working on our database group project. Our first meeting is set for Monday so at least I don't have to do anything for that this weekend. On Saturday I am going to SFU for a programming contest practice. It is the contest which will determine who will represent SFU at the actual contest and TWU students have been invited to participate just for practice and to see how we measure up. Unfortunately, only two of us are able to make it this weekend so it won't be a very accurate indicator. We get three hours to program a solution to six problems. The group which gets the most correct in the least amount of time. For more info on the contest see http://icpc.baylor.edu/icpc/.
My favorite class this semester is tennis. At first it started out slow, but I am really enjoying improving my skills and working on specific shots gradually. This morning we played our first doubles game but only used half the court (up to the end of the service boxes). We also started our serves with our rackets behind our backs instead of above our heads in the ready position and practiced serving into the opposite service box. I hope I get time to play tennis this weekend but it doesn't look too promising.
The lab is very quiet right now, only two other people here. I guess most commuter have gone home for the weekend already and most residents have their own computers. Or people are just avoiding their homework. I do that too.
Lifeline this week was a blast! We had a water war and a slip and slide and chocolate/butterscotch pudding wrestling. I got soaked though Natasha managed to stay dry. Heidi Buhler cut her foot, which wasn't so great. It took a long time for everyone to change because there was only so much room in the bathrooms. After we were all changed, Mandi and Muffin (Behn) welcomed everyone to Lifeline and Phil gave a short talk. Then we gave out free slushies to everyone who filled out their forms. After that we hung out and some people played on the Wii, or played fooseball or pool. The noise level was overwhelming after not having been there so long. There were lots of kids out and the risers were packed.
